Trophy and Rot

ARTIST STATEMENT

This photographic series, Trophy and Rot, is a meditation on the aftermath of human leisure, exploring the paradox of humanity's relationship with the natural world. The Adriatic's rocky coastline, celebrated for its pristine beauty, is here reframed as a repository of unwanted memories. While visitors often seek a souvenir to capture the joy of a vacation, the trash they leave behind becomes the most honest souvenir of all: a lasting record of their fleeting presence.

Through constructed still lifes, the dialogue between human culture and nature is formalised by arranging detritus objets trouvés (found objects)—a discarded plastic bottle, a forgotten shoe, or a single-use bag—alongside decaying organic matter. This visual juxtaposition reveals a silent tragedy: the inherent impermanence of nature’s cycle set against the intrusion of the stubborn permanence of material culture.

Ultimately, the series transforms the grotesque into the sublime, functioning as a contemporary memento mori that confronts the viewer with the ecological footprint of human activity. Trophy and Rot serves as a quiet call to reflection on the persistent and often unseen traces left behind long after the pleasant memories have receded.
